Thumbnail Requirements

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Format: JPG, GIF, PNG
  • Max file size: 2 MB

When scheduling a video, you can pick an optional custom thumbnail in the YouTube options — upload a new image or choose one from your media library. Custom thumbnails require your YouTube channel to be phone-verified; if it isn't, the video is still published and YouTube keeps an auto-generated thumbnail. Shorts don't support custom thumbnails.

Best Practices

  • Compelling thumbnails: Custom thumbnails increase click-through rates
  • Optimize titles: Include keywords naturally in the first 60 characters
  • Detailed descriptions: Include timestamps, links, and keywords
  • Tags: Use relevant tags to help discovery
  • Consistent schedule: Regular uploads help grow your audience
  • Shorts for growth: YouTube Shorts can help reach new audiences

Troubleshooting

Upload fails

  • Check your internet connection for large files
  • Ensure video format is supported
  • Verify file size is under 256 GB
  • Check if your channel has upload restrictions

Video stuck in processing

YouTube processes videos after upload. Processing time depends on video length and resolution. 4K videos may take several hours.

Can't upload Shorts

  • Ensure video is under 3 minutes
  • Use 9:16 vertical aspect ratio
  • Add #Shorts to the title or description
